Fort William

Fort William is a pretty seaside town in the highlands of Scotland. It was the destination of our train trip up from Glasgow. We were lucky to visit just outside of the peak tourist season.

The weather was not perfect but for us that did not matter. Despite raining on one of the days we stayed, the remaining days were fine and we managed to get the walking in that we wanted.

We typically stay in hotels when we travel. Nothing special but hotels that have a reputation for being clean, fairly inexpensive, and often business traveller friendly. Staying in such a hotel in Fort William was not a possibility. This is not a town that many business travellers go to and so we found ourselves in a small bed-and-breakfast overlooking the harbour.

For walkers, Fort William is well-known. It is the town closest to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. We did not tackle Ben Nevis as we’re not seasoned walkers. Instead we walked just outside of Fort William along the well maintained and signposted trails. Our walks were rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and vistas of the nearby lochs.
