Cataract Gorge near Launceston

Almost attached to the Tasmanian city of Launceston is Cataract Gorge. This deep gorge is within easy walking distance of the city centre.

Cataract Gorge

Launceston itself did not leave a strong impression on me. The city felt more diverse than Hobart but also less grand; it can not be easy being the second city of a state.

If you are visiting Cataract Gorge, be aware the walk on the left of the river (from the city) heads up a narrow track that can be steep at times. The middle section of the track consists of rocks and mud for a large part.

The track on the right of the river is flat and appears popular with the city’s runners.
