Past Traffic Previsions for France

The French government publish current and future traffic previsions on Bison futé. The predicted traffic maps are available about two weeks in advance. If you are driving in France, take note. If the day is labelled as red or black, plan for delays.

Sometimes it is useful to know how the traffic was in the past. This information is not trivially available.

So below is the beginning of another of my side projects: a higher quality map¹ of France’s major roads coloured using Bison futé’s previsions.

Dimanche 13 août des difficultés de circulation sont attendues plus particulièrement dans la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes sur les autoroutes A6, A7, et sur l’Arc méditerranéen sur les autoroutes A8, A9 et A61.

Dans le sens des DÉPARTS / Dimanche 13 Août est classé VERT au niveau national et ORANGE en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes et sur l’Arc Méditerranéen.

Mercredi 16 août, dans le sens des retours, la circulation sera difficile dans la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes et sur l’arc méditerranéen notamment sur l’A7 et l’A8.

Dans le sens des DÉPARTS / Mercredi 16 Août est classé VERT au niveau national.

Dans le sens des RETOURS / Mercredi 16 Août est classé VERT au niveau national et ORANGE en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Work in Progress

My goal is to produce a dynamic SVG map containing reasonable internal metadata to make data driven updates easy via Javascript and CSS.

So far I have a decent map mirroring the roads and layout of the Bison futé design. The map is an SVG but the metadata is lacking. Creating the map has been time consuming and labelling the roads is not a task I can do overnight.
